I think people driving through miss just how much pride people really take in and care about the village.
A Walk on Roosevelt Street
I was walking on Roosevelt Street the other night with a group of friends, and we had a full conversation about development in the village. Everyone was so passionate about their ideas on how it should go.
One of the friends is the developer of a current project that is about to start in the village. Others were reminiscing about times they've had at the places that would soon be demolished for the new project. The developer friend was sharing in the reminiscing about those same places. In fact, the place we were all walking to, Hennessey's, is on the chopping block to be redeveloped.
I confided in one of the other people that Hennessey's was one of the first places I went before I even moved here 22 years ago. I remember sitting on the back patio and feeling like it was completely indoors, but it was actually outdoors without me even realizing. A simple reminder of how nice the weather is here.
Fortunately, the conversation never got heated, but it constantly does in social media comments.
The Same Feeling, Years Later
It had a similar feeling sitting at Shore House the other day. My wife and I sat inside, but all the rollup doors and windows were open, and again it just felt comfortable even though we might as well have been outside. I had the Salmon, Shaved Fennel & Burrata Salad. It was okay. Not as good as everything else I've had there.
Holding Both
We were all excited about the Fish 101 restaurant that's coming to the village soon. It's another restaurant with really good and easy food that is counter service and doesn't require people to be locked down to a particular table.
Hennessey's going away felt OK for me. Although I have those memories, I enjoy the newer places that have come along with new developments much more than the old ones now. New spots like Lofty Coffee, the cottages, Nick's, Campfire, Wildland, Carruth Cellars, and Baba Coffee.
I really think It's okay for people to hang on to all the old memories they have and at the same time be excited for what's to come.
